Today is the 30th Birthday of the 87th Beavers! It was on this day in 1986 that Anne and Monica held the very first Beaver Colony meeting at the old Scout Hut in Boswall Parkway (on the same site as the ‘new’ hut is now).
Beavers started in the 1960s and 1970s in various countries around the world, and the UK introduced the Beaver Scout section in 1986. The 87th were right in there at the start, with first the Tuesday Beaver Colony, then the Wednesday Colony a short while later when the first one ran out of space!
The reasons for Beaver Scouting to be started in the UK were similar to the Wolf Cub, or Cub Scout, section in 1916: that adult leaders were bringing their younger children to meetings, and the youth members were in turn bringing their younger siblings.
Beaver Scouts then, and now, run with the ideals of Scouting, as laid down by Baden-Powell in 1907, influencing them.
